Haltom City Man Held On Attempted Murder Charge
A Haltom City man is in custody in Van Zandt County and will be facing an attempted murder charge after he allegedly attacked his girlfriend causing her serious bodily injury.
Keith Wayne Johnson, 39, turned himself in to authorities at the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office Thursday afternoon.
The alleged attack happened on Wednesday.
"Johnson got into a struggle with his girlfriend in their Haltom City apartment. Witnesses told officers that Johnson said he had killed her," said Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Investigator Randy Vasquez.
Vasquez said when Haltom City officers arrived at the apartment they found Sherri Cumby Stewart, 53, bleeding and suffering from multiple lacerations.
Stewart was transported by ambulance to John Peter Smith Hospital in Ft. Worth. Vasquez said that as of Friday morning Stewart was listed in fair condition.
Vasquez said that Johnson left the scene and fled to his father’s house in Van Zandt County.
"He left his father’s house and came to our office to turn himself in," said Vasquez.
Johnson was arraigned Friday morning by Van Zandt County Justice of the Peace Precinct 3 Ozelle Wilcoxson. His bond was set at $75,000, and he is currently awaiting transport back to Haltom City.
