Traffic Stop Leads To Discovery

Donna Limberger, Staff Writer

A routine traffic stop by Van Police Officer Tim Scharfenberg led to the discovery of over 140 grams of mushrooms and the arrest of a Tyler man.

According to a report by Scharfenberg, on September 17 he pulled over a vehicle being driven by Deven Joshua Descisciolo, 21, Tyler, for no license plate light.

While waiting for Descisciolo to provide proof of insurance, Scharfenberg detected the odor of what he believed to be marijuana.

The report went on to state that Descisciolo was removed from the vehicle and issued a citation. At that time Scharfenberg asked if there was anything illegal in the vehicle, Descisciolo said there was not.

Scharfenberg then spoke to a passenger in the vehicle and observed what he believed to be marijuana in the passenger’s side floorboard.

He then called Officer Jacob Richardson and K-9 Narco to the scene. The dog alerted on the vehicle and during the search of the vehicle a brown paper bag containing numerous mushrooms was discovered in the trunk. Marijuana cigarettes were also discovered.

Descisciolo was then arrested for possession of a controlled substance over 4 grams and under 400 grams. He was transported to the Van Zandt County Justice Center.
