The Canton Eaglettes remained in the playoff picture by splitting games against Chapel Hill and Athens.
On Tuesday, January 22, the Eaglettes kept Chapel Hill in the winless column for district play, downing the Lady Bulldogs by a 53-36 margin.
Canton held a 37-14 lead at the half, outscoring Chapel Hill 19-5 in the second quarter. Kelsey Nixon had a big night for the Eaglettes, scoring 18 points. Scartlett Miller and Meagan Wilson each scored eight; Cassie Williams, six; Nicholette Wilkerson, four, Kaitie Gummelt, three and Lindsey Denbow added one.
Against the second place Athens Lady Hornets, the Eaglettes found themselves in a 21-10 hole after the first quarter. The Canton girls played even with Athens after that, but couldn’t close the gap in a 60-50 loss.
Wilson had the hot hand on that night, scoring 22 points, while Williams followed her with eight. Courtney Smith scored six for the Eaglettes; Gummelt, five; Nixon, four; Miller, three; and Denbow, two.
The Brownsboro Lady Bears came to Canton on Tuesday night, and the Eaglettes travel to Van to take on the resurgent Lady Vandals on Friday. Those are the two teams with a chance to overtake the Canton girls for the final playoff spot.
