Mustangs Secure Second; Lady Mustangs Win Warm-Up

Terry Britt

MARTINS MILL— Tuesday’s 56-43 victory over LaPoynor gave the Martins Mill Mustangs three positives going into the Class A Divison I playoffs.

Not only are the Mustangs entering postseason action on a winning note, but they also secured the second seed out of District 19-A and got revenge for an earlier loss to the Flyers.

The Mustangs will play either Joaquin or Overton on Monday in a bi-district game in Arp.

"We definitely wanted to be in the spot we are in," Mustangs coach Trae Moore said. "We feel like we have a good shot at getting to the regional tournament and we’ll see what happens then."

Led by David Spradling’s 15 points, Martins Mill broke open a tight game in the fourth quarter and outscored LaPoynor 23-12 in that frame.

Cody Mewbourn finished with 13 points and B.J. Brawner added 10.

Austin Tindle had seven points, followed by Cody Brantley with six, Dalton Flowers and Jared Snyder with two apiece, and Isaac Craft with one.

Moore said he is pleased with what he has seen from the Mustangs late in the season.

"I think our intensity has stepped up to where it needs to be," he said. "There have been times this year we were not as focused as we needed to be.

"But they know from now on out, it’s a big game every time. Our defensive effort has been better and we’re moving better on offense," Moore said.

If the Mustangs win in the bi-district round, they will play North Hopkins in an area round contest Thursday night at Wills Point High School.

Lady Mustangs Cruise In Warm-up Games

The Lady Mustangs played an area round contest Friday against Detroit.

Coach Doug Barncastle’s team got ready for its postseason run with a pair of wins in warm-up games against Harmony and Dallas Bishop Lynch.

The Lady Mustangs held Harmony to single digits in every quarter last Saturday on the way to a 51-25 victory at O’Neal Weaver Gymnasium.

Taylor Daniel rolled up 23 points for Martins Mill while Jordan Barncastle put in 14.

Emily Williams finished with five, Christa Williams added four, Cara Chaney had three and Joanna Daniel scored two points.

Tuesday, it was Chaney leading the way with 17 points in the Lady Mustangs’ 47-29 win over Bishop Lynch.

Barncastle finished with 13 points, recording double figures for the third straight game.

Christa Williams added nine, Joanna Daniel had four points, and Taylor Daniel and Emily Williams added two each.
