Grass Fires Endanger County

J.C. Jones, Correspondent

The number of reported grass or brush fires seems to grow with each increase in the soaring temperatures.

Each grass fire ties up fire equipment and personnel and endangers property, Quinlan Volunteer Fire Department Chief Steve Bowen said.

"We are asking the public to use extreme caution with any form of fire. Fighting grass fires is causing damage to our equipment and can cause heat exhaustion to the firefighters wearing heavy bunker gear," he said.

Bowen also said the department will ask the Hunt County Commissioners’ Court for a burn ban "until we get a good soaking rain."

The Quinlan VFD fought a large grass fire near 9746 Blue Jay Pkwy. on Saturday and asked for the assistance of the Tawakoni South Volunteer Fire Department as the fire approached several homes.

The intense flames had to be fought on foot and required a rotating series of water tankers to supply the water to extinguish.

Bowen said any person who causes a grass fire can be held fully accountable for any resulting damage.
