Local Youths Bring Home Track Honors
Two local youths recently represented Hunt County in the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation (TAAF) State Games of Texas Track and Field Meet in San Antonio.
Tavoris "Pete" Anderson, 12, of Greenville and C.J. Coe, 9, of Cash both qualified for the state meet in the boys high jump.
Anderson, who competes in the Midget (12 and under) Division, jumped a personal best height of 5 feet to take second place and the silver medal.
Coe, participating in the Bantam (10 and under) Division, also jumped a personal best of 4 feet to finish eighth and come home with a state ribbon.
To earn a state berth, both boys had to first compete and place at the regional competition. Regionals were held in Frisco this year with more than 2,500 youths participating.
At the regional meet, Anderson won the gold medal in the Midget Division competition with a jump of 4 feet, 10 inches. He also competed in the boys 100-meter dash.
Coe took third place and a bronze medal in the high jump at 3 feet, 10 inches. He also competed in the 100-meter dash, long jump and the 400-meter relay.
Both Anderson and Coe were able to go to the state meet with the help of business sponsorships from Sav-A-Lot, Super 1 and Brookshire’s stores in Greenville, Brookshire’s of Quinlan, Pete Haayen of Allstate Insurance, Open Image, Cain’s Tire, Roy’s Muffler, Bower Signs and Crystal Clear Tint.
Bennie and Velma Hight of Sattisaw, Okla., also sponsored the two boys.
The two were coached this season by Blaine Sartan and Manuel Anderson.
