Nations looks back on 30-year career as Van city councilman

Van City Councilman Jackie Nations looks over some paperwork for the Van City Council meeting. Nations has served for 30 years as a council member

Following the May 6 city council election, there will be two new members on the Van City Council. But, there will also be one familiar face missing from the group as Jackie Nations will officially end his term after 30 years of service.

Nations was born in Grand Saline in December 1948. “My first year was in Wisdom Temple,” recalled Nations. “The school there closed down. My mother was a teacher there and when the school closed down, my mom and dad bought the housing facility where the teachers lived and moved it to Van on Ohio Street. As the crow flies, the new location was about a mile from where I live today. I have not ventured far from Van in my lifetime.”

After attending public school in Van, Nations graduated from Van High School in 1968.
