Vandals fighting back in district race

The Van Vandals turned a sharp corner following the conclusion of the first round of District 13-4A play, winning three out of the past four games to move to 3-6 overall and into a tie with the Wills Point Tigers.

The Vandals began play last week taking on the chief rival and district leader Canton April 21, falling behind early and never recovering in a 7-1 loss to the Eagles.

Canton opened play against Van by having each of their first three batters reach base: Blayne Clower with a walk, Cade Shaw getting hit by a pitch and John Adams via an RBI single. After back-to-back outs put Canton in danger of leaving runners on the base paths, Johnnie Krawietz delivered a 2 RBI single to center on a 1-2 count to extend the Eagle advantage to 3-0.

A pair of Van fielding errors in the fourth proved costly for the Vandals, allowing two more Canton runners to score to extend the Eagle lead to 5-0.

Canton added runs in the fifth and seventh innings, pushing their lead to 7-0 before Van finally broke through on the scoreboard with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the seventh to break up the shutout.
