Taylor ready to lead VHS Mighty Vandal Band

Friday night at Van’s Memorial Stadium will see more than one unit preparing to make their 2017 season debut.

While the Van Vandal varsity football team will kickoff their 2017 regular season against the Mineola Yellowjackets, the Van High School Mighty Vandal Band will be debuting their new show during halftime at the football game.

Randy Taylor is the new VHS Mighty Vandal Band director as he comes from Fruitvale High School to continue the marching style tradition in Van with a few new changes.

“I wanted to teach in a larger school system,” said Taylor as he discussed his move to Van from Fruitvale where he served as high school band director last school year. “I started really applying at a lot of places and I got called by Van for an interview. I did the interview and now I am here.”

Taylor has been on the job at Van since June 25. “I was on my tractor at 3 p.m. in the afternoon one day when I got the call that I got the job and by 7 a.m. the next morning, I was on the job at Van,” recalled Taylor. “I have been basically working six and one-half days a week every week since then because there was so much to do but I love every minute of it. It is not work when you love it.”
