1929 – 2024

Hazle Virginia Bryant Meredith of Canton died Friday, Jan. 26, at the age of 94. Hazle was born to Jesse Thomas and Martha Jane Hall Bryant in Van Zandt County on September 4, 1929, the seventh of what would be eight children. Following her graduation from Mabank High School, she moved to Dallas where she worked in the electronic accounting department at Southwestern Bell. In 1956, she married Arvil (“Tuck”) Meredith. They had two children, then moved the family from Dallas to Canton, where Hazle worked as director of food services at Canton ISD and lived the rest of her life.

Hazle enjoyed sewing and embroidery; attending gospel singings; watching baseball (played by her son, the Texas Rangers, and occasionally the Detroit Tigers); strolling through the Dallas Arboretum; and traveling. At Country Place, where she lived the last nearly 10 years of her life and was the longest-tenured resident at the time of her passing, she enjoyed participating in Bible study and group activities, especially dominoes, Skip-Bo, and other games. She had a quick smile and a twinkle in her eye. Hazle was a faithful Christian.

In the Baptist churches she attended over the years, she was active in the ladies’ groups and taught Sunday School. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a kind and giving person, selfless in the care of others, caring for her husband and many other family and friends during times of extended illness.

She was preceded in death by her parents; all of her siblings: Eunice Fern Bryant, Lola Lucille Bryant Hopkins, J.T. Bryant, Veta Rhea Bryant, Loyd Marion Bryant, Foye Fletcher Bryant, and Thad Thomas Bryant; and her husband, Arvil Meredith.

She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Jarvis, and husband, Craig, of Troy, Michigan; her son, Greg Meredith of Canton; and grandson, Slade Meredith of Port Arthur. She was loved dearly by her family and friends, including staff, residents, and friends of Country Place Senior Living Pine Residence and the compassionate care team from Delta Hospice. Pallbearers will be Slade Meredith, Craig Jarvis, Russ Aikman, Jarrett Leahy, Kevin Casey and Johnny Brewer.

Visitation with the family was held on Friday, February 2, 2024, from noon to 2 p.m. at Eubank Funeral Home in Canton followed by a graveside service at Meredith Campground Cemetery.
