The Edgewood Lady Dogs stayed close to home last week, making the short trek to Wills Point Aug. 19 and Aug. 21 to compete in the annual Hardman-Watson Invitational Tournament.

Edgewood enjoyed a dominant stretch at the event, going 5-1 overall to finish as tournament runners-up.

The Lady Dogs made it look easy during pool play, notching three wins on Aug. 19 including sweeps of Brook Hill, Class 4A Community and Class 6A North Mesquite.

Edgewood controlled the flow of play against Community throughout, beginning with a 25- 15 run to take the first set. The second would provide more of the same as the Lady Dogs again turned back the Lady Braves at every turn to earn a 25-15 set win.

North Mesquite offered less resistance as Edgewood cruised to an easy 25-9, 25-6 win.

With their perfect start to tournament play, the Lady Dogs advanced to the championship bracket and a matchup with Sunnyvale Aug. 21.

Edgewood would again earn a sweep, moving on to face a Commerce squad that went 2-1 in pool play with wins over Quitman and Quinlan and a loss to Wills Point.

The Lady Dogs would outlast Commerce in three sets before coming up short in a two-set loss to District 12-3A rival Emory Rains in the final.

Edgewood was scheduled to host its own annual tournament Aug. 26 and 28 before taking on another larger opponent, Class 4A Brownsboro on the road Aug. 31.
